Welcome to Sara Sharp Fine Art

I am an artist who loves creating original textile wall hangings.  These "art quilts" are fabric collages,  combining both commercial fabrics and those I have dyed, painted, or printed myself.  I enjoy constructing scenes of nature and the world around me.  Being a lifelong birder, I often use my own photographs of both city birds, shore birds and other scenes of nature as ideas for my art quilts.  After many layers of fabric are secured in place, I may embellish my focal point with layers of many colors of thread, in a technique known as "thread painting", blending these colors together just as I would do if I were using paints. I then use hand-guided free-motion quilting, done on my domestic sewing machine,  to fill the rest of the surface with designs that both accentuate and complement the subject.  Each art quilt's edges are bound, and then I sew a sleeve to the back to hold a rod or slat, from which the quilt may be hung on the wall.

I also enjoy sharing my experiences with other fabric enthusiasts, by doing demonstrations and teaching classes in both thread painting and designing art quilts.
